WIT 1-11

UCC 3-5

WIT had to settle for a share of the spoils in the opening round of the Ashbourne Cup in camogie last night, as UCC hit a last minute point from a free to earn a draw in the Mardyke.

Points from Laura Treacy and Emma Comerford gave WIT an early lead before UCC hit back with points to level matters. Patricia Jackman briefly gave WIT the lead again with a nice point, but UCC hit two fantastic goals as their full forward Amy O’Connor hit the net twice in five minutes.

Those goals gave UCC a 2-2 to 0-3 lead but credit to WIT they fought back well towards the end of the opening half and two points through Laura Treacy and Emma Comerford, cut the gap to a goal before Laura Treacy soloed through the UCC and hand passed the ball into the net to leave the sides level at half time.

Emma Comerford hit two of the opening three points of the second half for WIT with Patricia Jackman also pointing. UCC kept in touch with a point before they levelled matters again when Amy O’Connor completed a hat trick of goals to tie the sides (WIT 1-9 UCC 3-3).

Emma Comerford hit four pointed frees before the end for WIT and leading by a point with a minute left it looked good for a WIT win but a last second pointed free for UCC levelled matters and both sides have a point on the table after the opening round.

WIT host DCU next Tuesday night at 7pm in WIT Sports Campus and will need a victory to guarantee a place in the semi-finals.
